SAS STNAME

What is it?

• The STNAME function converts a 2 character state name like "AL" to ALABAMA.
• Alternatively, there is a STNAMEL which converts a 2 character state name like "CT" to Connecticut
• The "L" at the end appears to be for the lowercase version of the STNAME function.

Syntax:

• stname('AL');
• stnamel('CT');

Data work.my_data_file;     Result_1 = STNAME('AL');     Result_2 = STNAMEL('CT'); Run;

What's happening in the script above?

• Result's 1 and 2 are converting the 2 Digit State Acronymn to the full spelling, only difference being upper and lower-case letters

STNAME and STNAMEL Example:

Result_1	STNAME('AL');	ALABAMA	The uppercase version of the function
Result_2	STNAMEL('CT');	Connecticut	The lowercase version of the function; note the first letter is uppercase
